Oakton Community Park Improvements

Background

Oakton Community Park, located at 2841 Hunter Mill Road, has been a valued part of the Oakton community since the Park Authority acquired the property in 2001. In 2005, a master plan shaped by local residents and community groups outlined a vision for the park that included parking, trails, a playground, picnic pavilions, and interpretive features. Since then, several key elements of that plan have been completed, including a parking area, natural surface trails and a playground.

One of the most distinctive features of the park is the historic 1897 Oakton Schoolhouse. This treasured building was relocated from another site along Hunter Mill Road and restored to reflect its turn‑of‑the‑century character. Today, it serves as a centerpiece of the park’s history and a venue for community learning.

In 2019, the Greater Oakton Community Association (GOCA) was established as an all‑volunteer organization. The Park Authority partnered with GOCA to support community use of both the park and the schoolhouse for meetings, classes, rentals, and historic or educational programs. As community use increased, so did the need for additional park amenities originally envisioned in the master plan. This led to the creation of a conceptual development plan to guide future improvements.

Upcoming Improvements

To align with current fiscal resources, the Conceptual Development Plan is divided into two phases:

Phase 1 Improvements (Spring–Summer 2027)

  • New picnic pavilion with furnishings
  • Walkway improvements
  • Hose bib for improved utility access

Construction for Phase 1 is anticipated to begin in Spring 2027 and be completed by the end of Summer 2027.

Be Part of The Future of Oakton Community Park

Financial Contributions

Funding is secured for Phase 1 of the improvement project at Oakton Community Park. However, the project is designed to be scalable, meaning community contributions can help add additional amenities and enhanced features that elevate the park experience for all visitors.

Soon, the Fairfax County Park Foundation will begin accepting donations to help enrich and expand Oakton Community Park during Phase 2 of the project. Community support will make it possible to bring added elements to the park.
