Proposed Trail and Interpretive Signage at Salona Park

Proposed Trail and Interpretive Signage at Salona Park

Project Background

The Fairfax County Park Authority conservation easement at the historic Salona property preserves its open space and rich history. The focus of this park is to create a space for public use that honors the historical significance and natural beauty of the land.

The vision for Salona aims to balance public access, historical preservation and natural resource conservation, allowing the community to enjoy this unique space in a way that complements its character.

Proposed Concept

The proposed concept for Salona includes:

  • Walking Trail: Approximately a ½-mile walking trail loop to provide opportunities for outdoor recreation and peaceful enjoyment of nature.
  • Small Gravel Parking Lot: A modestly sized parking area to ensure safe and accessible entry to the property while preserving its natural appearance.
  • Interpretive Signage: Informational signs along the trail to highlight Salona’s historical milestones and unique natural features, offering visitors a chance to learn and reflect.

The illustration below represents the proposed concept for the park.

Community Feedback

PHASE 1

On October 13, 2025, the Fairfax County Park Authority invited the community to a public meeting to share feedback on the future of Salona Park. The meeting allowed attendees to review the proposed concept, ask questions, and offer input.

Following the meeting, community members were invited to submit additional feedback online for 30 days. A report of all our public comments received pertaining to this project is available here.

Community perspectives play a vital role in shaping a space that honors Salona’s heritage while serving the broader public, and we thank everyone who participated in this initial engagement period.

PHASE 2

The Park Authority will install two interpretive signs along the trail to highlight the unique history and ecological value of one of McLean’s few remaining meadows. We welcome your ideas on what content should be included on these signs. Please share your input below.
