Mount Vernon Woods Skatepark Development Project
Mount Vernon Woods Skatepark Development Project
Project Update
The Fairfax County Park Authority is excited to announce the start of Phase 2 of renovations at Mount Vernon Woods Park, bringing a brand-new skate park to the community. Construction will begin in September 2025 and is anticipated to be completed this winter.
The new skate park was designed with valuable input from the community, following a public comment period in fall 2024. Resident feedback helped shape the design to ensure the new space reflects the needs and interests of local skaters and families. Below is a rendering of the final design.
Background
Mount Vernon Woods Park is undergoing an extensive redevelopment project. The improvements to the park are guided by the park conceptual development plan which was approved by the Park Authority Board in 2015. The Conceptual Development Plan (CDP) provides recommendations for future park uses and facilities. Development of the CDP is based on an assessment of area-wide needs and community preferences in balance with the existing site conditions.
In alignment with FCPA's commitment to providing a diverse range of recreational opportunities throughout Fairfax County, The Great Park, Great Communities 2010-2020 Park System Master Plan recommended adding a neighborhood skatepark in the Mount Vernon District. This along with all of the other new forthcoming facilities were vetted through a community engagement process and captured in the 2015 Park Conceptual Development Plan.
Below is the conceptual design for Mount Vernon Woods Park upon completion of the redevelopment project.
A Selection Advisory Committee (SAC) was formed to evaluate Request for Qualifications (RFQ) and Request for Proposals (RFP) for Fairfax County Park Authority’s first design-build contract for the skatepark at Mount Vernon Woods per the Fairfax County Department of Procurement and Material Management Division guidelines and the Fairfax County Purchasing Resolution.
Three firms provided a qualification package in response. SAC evaluated each firms’ submissions and found Spohn Ranch, Inc to be the highest ranked firm and demonstrated to be fully qualified and providing the best value for Fairfax County.
Public Comment
Thank you to everyone who participated in the public comment period regarding the two possible design concepts shared by Spohn Ranch in fall 2024. Feedback received during this process helped shape the final design.
Public comments are now closed, and a final design has been developed. Construction is scheduled to begin in September 2025.
